Updated: Oct 14, 2020

Amanda Roberts Mather

There’s nothing scarier than uprooting your life and moving halfway around the world for a job! Join the presenter as she journeys from her comfort zone in Aggieland to the vibrant, culturally diverse Middle East and many countries in between. The presenter offers a practical paradigm of advising relationships through the lens of multiculturalism. Along the way, attendees will discuss: culture shock (for both advisors and students), cultural stereotypes, cultural competency development, diversity, and how understanding culturalism and cultural competency is a key component for successful advising strategies. Advisers are key resources for students; therefore, it is important they consider their own understanding of multiculturalism in order to respond effectively to diverse student populations. Attendees will develop a deeper understanding of the importance of multicultural advising and the ways multicultural competencies are explicitly intertwined within the advising profession.
